Senior Speaking Contest – 2021
Students who are in Year 10 in 2021 at any secondary school are eligible to enter. A Rotary club must sponsor the school. Each school is liked with a Rotary club.
It is recommended that Rotary club heats be conducted during the week commencing 2-6 August 2021.
Semi-finals will take place in the week 18-20 August 2021.
Each participant may choose their own topic, but the four values of the Rotary Four Way Test must be addressed and woven into the speech:
Of the things we think, say or do
1 Is it the TRUTH?
2 Is it FAIR to all concerned?
3 Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
4 Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
The duration of the speech should be six (6) minutes.
A warning bell will sound at five (5) minutes with a final bell at six (6) minutes.
Penalties may apply if time varies by more than 20 seconds either side of 6 minutes.
A Timekeeper will complete a timesheet this will be provided to the Adjudicators to assist in their final assessment.
School level: At the discretion of the school.
Rotary club heats: One Adjudicator accredited with Rostrum or Toastmasters and at least one Rotarians who is familiar with the Rotary judging process.
Semi-finals/Final: All Adjudicators will be accredited with Rostrum or Toastmasters with a clear understanding of, and experience in, Rotary-style adjudication.
Assessment is made on the following basis:
Inclusion and expansion of the four values of the Rotary Four Way Test woven into the speech.
It is important to demonstrate how Rotary values affect and influence us in everyday life.
Students offer a considered and balanced review of their topic.
Points presented clearly and supported by appropriate evidence.
A range of arguments, factors and hypothesis provided.
Appeal to the audience.
* Palm cards are permitted but their use should not detract from the overall presentation.
* No other props are permitted.
* A stand-alone microphone will be provided for Rotary club heats, semi-finals and the final.
School heat – winner/s
Proceed to the Rotary club heat plus any recognition considered appropriate by the school.
Rotary club heat – winner
A certificate and a gift voucher to the value of $50 – provided by the sponsoring Rotary club.
District Semi Final – winner
A certificate and a $150 gift voucher. The winner will progress to the District Final.
District Semi Final – runner up
A certificate and a $100 gift voucher. The runner up may progress to the District Final.
District Final – winner
A certificate, a $250 gift voucher and the Fred Marsh Perpetual Trophy that is kept in the school for the following 12 months. The winner will progress to the State Final.
District Final – runner up
A certificate and a $150 gift voucher.
The runner up will progress to the State Final.
State Final – winner
A certificate and a $400 gift voucher. The winner will also receive the Fred Marsh Perpetual Trophy that is to be kept at the school for 12 months.
State Final – runner up
A certificate and a $200 gift voucher.
There is a fee of $200 for each club’s finalist entering the finals competition. This fee will help to defray the costs of providing prizes, operating costs of the competition, as well as meal costs and gifts for the Adjudicators. Clubs will be invoiced for this cost upon confirmation of their participation in the competition.
In addition, each participating Rotary club should meet the costs for:
* The prize for the winner of the club heat – to the value of $50.
*The meal and any other courtesy/acknowledgement extended to the accredited Adjudicators at the club heat.
*The meals of the students and their teacher/s at the Rotary club heat.
*The meals of the student and their teacher/s at the finals.
