Information for Rotary Clubs

Junior Speaking Contest – 2021

Students who are in Year 6 in 2021 at any primary school within Rotary District 9455 are eligible to enter. A Rotary club must sponsor the school. Rotary clubs are encouraged to sponsor schools that are in the catchment of the Rotary club’s linked secondary school.

It is recommended that club heats be conducted during the week 6-10 September 2021.

Finals will follow during the week 13-17 September 2021.

Each participant may choose their own topic, but at least two (2) of the values of the Rotary Four Way Test must be woven into the speech. Students will not be penalized for using only two of the Four Way Test values. Students will not be awarded extra marks should they use more than two values.

Of the things we think, say or do:

1     Is it the TRUTH?

2     Is it FAIR to all concerned?

3     Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?

4     Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?

The duration of the speech should be three (3) minutes.

A warning bell will sound at two (2) minutes with a final bell at three (3) minutes.

Penalties may apply if time varies by more than 20 seconds either side of three (3) minutes.

A Timekeeper will complete a time sheet which will be provided to the Adjudicators to assist in their final assessment.

School level:                   At the discretion of the school.

Rotary Club heats:       One Adjudicator accredited with Rostrum or Toastmasters and at least one Rotarian who is familiar with the Rotary judging process.

Semi-finals/Final:        All Adjudicators will be accredited with Rostrum or Toastmasters with a clear understanding of, and experience in, Rotary-style adjudication.

Assessment is made on the following basis:

It is important to demonstrate how Rotary values affect and influence us, and the speaker, everyday life.
